This was a time during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s when quacks and shysters roamed the land barking their cures and their “brews” to all who would listen. It coincided with a time when people were first really concerned with their well being, learning that good health was desirable and hoping that it was possible. Their credulity was imposed upon by many fast buck artists who told them what they perhaps wanted to hear or furnished them what they wanted to drink-Bitters, which was often laced heavily with alcohol, sometimes with habit forming drugs.
