Social Networking has become increasingly popular as there are lots of sites that emerged in last 7 years offering this service. Facebook, Orkut, MySpace, and Friendster are some of the most popular social networking sites. The aim of these sites is to build communities of people who share common interests and activities. Those who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others are also using these websites.There are some people who believe in the myth of individualism in which everyone succeeds or fails on the basis of an individuals own abilities and efforts. However research shows that having a strong social network increases the chance of getting a job, pay and promotion, influence and effectiveness, etc.There are huge numbers of networks people belongs to whereby people can share their knowledge and interest. Almost everything in this planet has its group on somewhere in these websites. People are often surprised when they spend a little time thinking about who is in their network including family, friends, team members, employees, managers, partners, customers etc. Looking at who you interact with frequently, who are you dependent on, who is dependent on you, and who you just like hanging out with is another way to generate the list. Now a new generation of sites is going to a step further and using satellite positioning to track users’ whereabouts. Users with Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled mobile phones log on using small application loaded onto the handset. Development is going beyond ones imagination before 10 years. Its time think and question about “Are social networking sites really required?”Social Networking has definitely taken over the massive population. Years ago, it started with “Friendster. Friendster did not have much functionality to deliver to their audience. Hence, “MySpace” came out with some additional features. MySpace made the news numerous times. MySpace has some content that is not advisable to be viewed by children. Gradually MySpace became junk with lots of anonymous profiles and unauthorized content. Then emerged is the “FaceBook”, a social networking site for college and universities students. It then spread to high schools and now to companies. The only problem with the Facebook is that it does not allow to view profiles of those not in your network. “Linked-In” is similar website where you don’t have a photo, you don’t belong to groups, and you have a very limited viewing of profiles. It is basically a background or resume of your self and you befriend past co-workers, present co-workers, classmates, etc and use them for actual networking.Every system has some pros and cons depending on how it is used. Likewise social networking has many advantages and many shortcomings. New generation social networking system using GPS, that allows us to share our location as we move around and tag where we are. This has so many opportunities in both commercial land and in our personal lives. This being used in social networking aspect is new twist on, where do you live? A social networking site is like a virtual meeting place where people can hang out and discuss different topics. Some use these networking sites to promote their blogs, to post bulletins and updates. There are just a few of the reasons why social networking is getting lot of attention lately. Even though email and messenger are the best communication tools people needs some sort of open communication. It makes life more exciting for many people and they feel comfortable when they are using social networking sites. The social networking brings opportunities to conduct our own media. It allows you to create a profile, where you can share your interests with other users and also, you can make new friends. These type of sites are also used people such as bands or authors to build up friends in order to generate interest in their music and books. On the downside though, there is also the chance of people’s profiles being hacked or identities being stolen. Users have the option of setting their profile to private so that only their friends can view it, and on Facebook, visitors must register with the site before they can search for friends.In conclusion, Social Networking is lot more interesting. Each of social networking companies is making some very interesting contributions in the social Networking Space. Each of their representatives believes that social networking is going to permeate more and more of our experience with everything.
